Burgers are far and away my favorite thing on this Earth to eat. A traditional burger marries my passion for sandwiches and anything made with ground beef. This burger specifically is a fresh and lighter take on the classic American burger.

I do love mixing things up and having burgers with all different types of meat. Ground beef is my favorite meat to cook with however. Meatloaf, burgers and meatballs. They are all heavenly. Some of my favorites are:

Luxurious Korean BBQ Burgers with Gochujang Slaw
Easy and Savory Korean Gochujang Meatballs

There are thousands, if not more different types of burgers. You can change up so many aspects of what makes a burger. And you get so many amazing and delicious results. By switching up the meat or combination of meats used, the condiments, cheeses, vegetables and bread, the combinations are endless.

I love turkey burgers but I do find that they can come out a tad on the drier side a lot. The combination of sweet Italian sausage and turkey is life altering. Ground turkey offers a lean taste. And the fat content in the sweet Italian sausage adds all of the moisture you need. This burger has so much depth of flavor and is very moist. Fresh vegetables really make this burger pop and the sriracha mayo ties everything in perfectly. It lends this burger the perfect combination of creaminess and heat.

What if I can’t find ground sweet Italian sausage at the grocery store?

My store actually frequently does not have packages of ground sausage. However, the ground sausage is priced higher than the regular sweet Italian sausages (in the casings). I prefer to buy the sausages and remove the casing myself. Simply slice down the middle of the sausage length-wise and remove the inside filling. Squeeze the meat and break it apart while adding it to the large mixing bowl with ground turkey.

Directions

In a large mixing bowl, add the ground turkey and ground sweet Italian sausage. Season the meat with the salt, black pepper, garlic powder, dried oregano, dried parsley and crushed red pepper. Mix with hands until well combined. Take care to not overmix the meat. You will form 6-7 burgers out of the meat. Portion the meat into equal amounts for each burger you will be making. To make the patty, take the meat and press down in between the palms of your hand to flatten. Continue to flatten while turning the meat until a circular shape is reached. The burger patty should be roughly 3/4 inch thick on the outside. Try to have the middle at about 1 inch thickness.

Heat a pan sprayed skillet on medium heat. When the pan is hot, add the sausage and turkey burger patties. Do not add more than 4 patties to the pan so that you don’t overcrowd the burgers. Cook for 5 minutes and flip the burger. Press down firmly with spatula the first time you flip the burgers to flatten a little. You will continue to fry the burgers flipping every 5 minutes. Cook for about 22-25 minutes total until cooked through. Once the first batch is cooked, transfer to a paper towel lined plate. Repeat with the second batch.

While frying the hamburgers, heat a separate pan sprayed frying pan on medium heat. Each set of buns will use roughly ½ tablespoon of butter. Slather the desired amount of butter on each side of the buns. You will grill your hamburger buns, top and bottom for about 1-2 minutes on each side or until golden brown.
