Fresh California Sausage and Turkey Burger

Dominique Collins-Bloomfield
This burger is a winner. Fresh California Sausage and Turkey Burger puts a light spin on the classic burger. The fresh vegetables paired with the creamy sriracha mayo make this a burger that's as decadent as it is delicious.

Ingredients

  • 20 Ounces ground turkey
  • 16 Ounces ground sweet Italian sausage
  • 1 Teaspoon salt
  • 1 Teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 Teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 Teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 Teaspoon dried parsley
  • ¼ Teaspoon crushed red pepper
  • 6-7 Hamburger buns
  • 3-4 Tablespoons butter
  • ½ Head of lettuce
  • 1 Tomato sliced
  • ½ Purple Onion thinly sliced
  • 1 Jalapeño thinly sliced
  • 1 Avocado

Burger Dressing

  • ½ Cup mayonnaise
  • Tablespoons sriracha

Instructions

  • In a large mixing bowl, add the ground turkey and ground sweet Italian sausage. Season the meat with the salt, black pepper, garlic powder, dried oregano, dried parsley and crushed red pepper. Mix with hands until well combined. Take care to not overmix the meat. You will form 6-7 burgers out of the meat. Portion the meat into equal amounts for each burger you will be making. To make the patty, take the meat and press down in between the palms of your hand to flatten. Continue to flatten while turning the meat until a circular shape is reached. The burger patty should be roughly 3/4 inch thick on the outside. Try to have the middle at about 1 inch thickness.
  • Heat a pan sprayed skillet on medium heat. When the pan is hot, add the sausage and turkey burger patties. Do not add more than 4 patties to the pan so that you don't overcrowd the burgers. Cook for 5 minutes and flip the burger. Press down firmly with spatula the first time you flip the burgers. You will continue to fry the burgers flipping every 5 minutes. Cook for about 22-25 minutes until cooked through. Once the first batch is cooked, transfer to a paper towel lined plate. Repeat with the second batch.
  • While frying the hamburgers, heat a separate pan sprayed frying pan on medium heat. Each set of buns will use roughly ½ tablespoon of butter. Slather the desired amount of butter on each side of the buns. You will grill your hamburger buns, top and bottom for about 1-2 minutes on each side or until golden brown.
  • In a small mixing bowl, combine mayonnaise and sriracha and stir until fully combined. When ready to assemble, lay the Burger Dressing generously on the top and bottom buns. Lay the sausage and turkey burger on the bottom bun and top with lettuce, tomato, purple onion, jalapeño and avocado. Cover with top bun and serve.
